The request
Our client gave us a hand-drawn sketch and the actual individual packaging bags they use in production. Using the bags for precise measurements, we built a custom 3D model tailored to their process.
How the tool works
The tool holds each packaging bag in place while a custom pusher opens the bag, making it easy to pour the hot Yokan mixture inside.
Improving the design with the client
As we talked through the manufacturing process, we learned that the mixture is poured at a high temperature and that separate dividers were not needed.
Based on that, we recommended PETG, a material with better heat resistance, and redesigned the tool so the dividers are joined into a single piece. This reduced filament use while keeping the tool strong.
During prototyping we also found that a hollow pusher lets air escape more easily, which makes the bags much easier to open. After several test iterations, this became the final design.
